EXPERIENCE

Freelance Journalist in Cairo, Egypt (Aug. 2004 to present)
Reporter/Stringer writing for American, British, and Egyptian publications, including TIME magazine, Scripps Howard News Service, The Sunday Times (London), The Daily Telegraph (London), The San Francisco Chronicle, and Cairo magazine, an English-language weekly. Wrote variety of stories about regional and Egyptian politics, terrorist attacks, anti-Americanism in the Arab world, American policy in the Middle East, and Arab-Muslim reaction to world events, as well as in-depth features, news analyses, and travel articles. Conducted interviews in Arabic. Followed President Mubarak and opposition candidate Ayman Nour on the campaign trail to cover the country’s first multi-party presidential elections in September 2005, traveling across the country to attend rallies and visiting polls on Election Day. Broadcasting experience includes spot reporting and Q and A's on Egypt's presidential and parliamentary elections and terrorist attacks in Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh, National Public Radio, BBC TV, BBC Radio, Sky News and local radio stations in Washington, DC, Detroit, Los Angeles, Oklahoma City, Miami, Dallas, Chicago, and others.

Transnational Broadcasting Studies (TBS) (Sept. 2004 to present)
Managing Editor of a biannual journal published by the Adham Center for Television Journalism at the American University in Cairo and the Middle East Centre at St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford. Published both in print and on the Internet (www.tbsjournal.com), the journal covers satellite broadcasting in the Arab and Islamic worlds. Responsibilities include writing articles, assigning stories, editing all copy, maintaining and updating the journal’s Web site. Played instrumental role in launching the first peer-reviewed print edition of TBS in June 2005.

The Oregonian (May-Aug. 2000)
Reporting intern in Portland, Ore., for one of the nation’s top regional dailies in the year it won two Pulitzers. Spent six weeks as a reporter in a suburban bureau and six weeks writing for the award-winning Living Team. Wrote spot news, features and enterprise stories that appeared on Metro, Living and Business section fronts.

Scripps Howard News Service (May-Aug. 1999)
Reporting intern for national wire service in Washington, D.C. Wrote variety of daily stories, including articles on the White House, IRS reform, serial killers and teenage sex.

States News Service (May-Aug. 1998)
Reporting intern for national wire service based in Washington, D.C. Wrote news stories on everything from health care to environmental legislation. Edited and wrote legislative briefs for print and radio.

• Winner of 1998-1999 Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker, 2000 Online Pacemaker and 11 Virginia Press Association Awards
Managing Editor responsible for overseeing and editing all daily content. Orchestrated spot news and special projects, including coverage of 2000 presidential election with reporters in Texas, Tennessee, Florida, New York, Washington and Richmond.
