Alston questions ABC's lack of response

July 17,2003

The Federal Communications Minister has asked the Australian Broadcasting Authority to find out why he is still waiting for a response to his claim of biased reporting on the ABC's AM program.

Richard Alston raised 68 matters in his complaint to the ABC in May.

A spokesman for the ABC says he will get a detailed response on Monday, well before the 60-day deadline for answering complaints set down in the corporation's code of practice.

But Senator Alston says the ABC's website promises it will try to respond to complaints within four weeks.

"I'm simply saying that there's been a deathly silence for some seven weeks and if the ABC's own website offers to provide an explanation for a delay beyond the four-week period, then I haven't received any such explanation," he said.

"I would have thought ordinary members of the public would be very disappointed to know that this is the way the ABC handles complaints."
